Position Description

Roadway Maintenance Engineer



Overview:

The purpose of this position is to supervise the repair and care of pavement, shoulders, landscaping, facilities, equipment, guardrails, walls, fencing, drainage, rights of way, and bridges and ensuring the roadway is open and available for the public. This is accomplished by scheduling and assigning tasks, monitoring and evaluating tasks, progress and performance, receiving and coordinating work orders, ensuring appropriate tools, equipment and supplies are available, providing coaching and instruction, supervising maintenance, repair and inspection, coordinating regular and preventive maintenance, identifying training opportunities, coordinating work with other departments and agencies, and maintaining records. Other duties include preparing strategic plans, completing annual inspections, responding to emergencies, and responding to weather-related emergencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Completes administrative tasks by completing work orders, planning and scheduling tasks, generating reports and cost analyses, scheduling and documenting time and labor costs, managing reports and procedures, monitoring staff, and completing appraisal and progress reports.
  • Manages training activities by identifying training opportunities, evaluating employee skill, experience and proficiency, scheduling training, and reviewing job hazard analysis.
  • Administers safety guidelines and recommendations by developing and implementing job hazard analysis tasks, facilitating safety meetings, ensuring safety guidelines are followed and all mandatory training is completed.
  • Serves customers by addressing patron concerns, responding to inquiries, resolving issues, and coordinating information with local cities.
  • Analyzes productivity and costs by creating and presenting reports, participating in meetings, recommending solutions to challenges and demands, and planning and scheduling maintenance activities.
  • Completes technical requirements by inspecting and planning concrete repairs, utilizing and applying striping, markers and jiggle bard, inspecting and identifying backfill materials, and utilizing specialized equipment for system-wide drainage and EPA requirements.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; college level course work or vocational training in the maintenance and/or construction field preferred.
  • 3+ years hands-on experience in Maintenance and/or construction field; at least 1 year in a lead or supervisory role preferred.
  • Knowledge of Texas Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Skill in the operation of pickups, dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand project blueprints, landscape plans, and equipment service manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various positions and to provide supervision to maintenance staff.
  • Ability to work with various computer programs in the implementation of asset management, inventory, work order, and reporting systems.
  • Valid State of Texas Commercial Class A driver's license required.
